Viña Gormaz, a former cooperative that went into individual ownership in late 1970’s, is the undisputed leader in Ribera del Duero’s Eastern sub-region of Soria – This zone has until recently been more or less overlooked, and they hold it in high esteem due to the unheard of concentrations of old vines that sit on original rootstock and continue to be propagated in that manner today. Fans of dusty, intense Ribera are wise to explore Soria’s individual villages deeply. You can think of grape sourcing in Ribera much as you do in Burgundy – Individual families own and control small plots, sometimes as minimal as a row or two of vines. As is the case with all of Viña Gormaz’s offerings, grapes come from 22 individual villages in Soria. Winemaker Maria Jose Garcia has been leading all activities here since 1999. It is worth noting that Viña Gormaz was one of twelve original wineries registered to Ribera del Duero upon the DOC’s creation in 1982.
Intense ruby red color. Ripe fruit aromas with hints of cocoa and roasted coffee. A touch of sweet fruit on the palate with a backbone of tannins and a little acidity makes this a complex and balanced crianza.
One long draw off the nose of this wine really brings us back to Spain! Red meats, roast lamb, stewed fish, mature cheeses like cabrales blue, mixed with a creamy binder like sour cream or mayonnaise and spread on a slice of baguette.

Asnella is a singular expression of terroir that is a major departure from what most people associate with Vinho Verde. It shows remarkable concentration, length and minerality. This unique vineyard allows for an exposition of two different soil types and their effects on the resultant wine. The granite lends richness and weight, while the schist gives minerality, lift and precision.
Brilliant green-yellow. On the nose, lime zest, green apple, wet stone, and white pepper notes that are almost reminiscent of a Federspiel level Gruner. The palate is clean, concentrated, and incisive, with dry citrus and unripe pear followed by flavors of tarragon, slate and white pepper.
The flinty minerality and bright fruit on the Asnella make it an ideal pair for oysters, as well as shrimp, clams, mussels and other seafood. The clean flavors of east Asian cuisine are a particularly good pairing.
